Signs of Stroke-ACT FAST!When someone is having a stroke, it’s crucial that bystanders act quickly.If they don’t recognize the symptoms, the stroke victim may suffer permanent brain damage. Here’s what the American Stroke Association suggests, based on the word "FAST" (at right). If the person has trouble smiling, raising arms or speaking, call 9-1-1 immediately. “Tests have proven that these are very good indicators of stroke,” says Claranne Mathiesen, R.N., of the Stroke Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. “But time is the most important consideration. Clot-busting drugs, the approved treatment for stroke, must be given within three hours of the first symptoms.”
